When many people think of braces, they likely recall the heavy, painful-looking metal and wire devices of years gone by and schoolyard taunts of “metal mouth” from less-than-sensitive classmates.

But orthodontics has come a long way since those days.

While metal braces are still in use, patients now have more choices in selecting orthodontic treatments that are effective, less intrusive and more appealing to the eye.

With offices in Fort Walton Beach and Niceville, Dr. Roger A. Grace and Dr. Brodie L. Bowman work with patients to develop a treatment approach that best suits the patient’s individual needs and lifestyle.

Whether treating children, teens or adults, Dr. Bowman can help patients select braces that offer proper treatment, comfort and a path toward a healthier and more appealing smile.

“They are a little shy about their looks,” Dr. Bowman said of many patients. “But by the time you get the braces off, they are a completely different person.”

Some of the braces and other devices offered by Dr. Bowman include:

  • Mini-Diamond: These are smaller in size than traditional braces and provide better comfort to patients. This approach also carries the same treatment time as regular metal braces.
  • Clear: These ceramic braces feature clear material that makes braces less obvious. This option is often popular with adults, although these braces can be more fragile than others, and elastic ties can become stained between visits to the orthodontist.
  • Invisalign System: These clear templates, known as aligners, can be used by adults and some teenage patients. The aligners can be designed to fit your teeth and are changed every few weeks as treatment progresses. They can be removed in order to eat, as well as to brush and floss your teeth.
  • SmartClip: These braces utilize what is known as self ligation, which allows brace wire to move. SmartClip can offer less friction and more comfort. This approach also can reduce time in the orthodontist’s office and the number of adjustments needed during treatment.
