Braces for Kids: How to Prepare

Braces for kids have gotten much more advanced over the last several years, and getting orthodontic treatment early is the best way to ensure that your child will have healthy and attractive teeth. Brodie Bowman Orthodontics offers braces for kids, as well as Invisalign® and other orthodontic treatments. Although braces have become much more comfortable in recent decades, your child may still have some fear associated with getting their braces on. Here’s how to prepare your child and get them excited for braces.
Go Through the Process Step by Step
Many kids are fearful before getting their braces on purely because they don’t know what to expect. An easy way to get them more comfortable with the idea is to talk them through every step of the process so they know what to expect. You can do this with our orthodontist, or you can do some research at home about braces for kids to get the information. Either way, make sure you leave plenty of room for your child to ask questions. You should also remind your child that our orthodontist is going to do everything they can to make sure they are comfortable while the braces are being put on.
Have the Fridge Stocked with Food for Afterward
A common concern that many kids have when getting their braces on is that they won’t be able to eat their favorite foods afterward. While there are some foods they will need to avoid for a while, this doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy a nice sweet treat. Before your child gets their braces on, make sure your fridge is full of yogurt, sorbet, and other soft items for them to munch on. Mashed potatoes are also a great option if you want something more savory.
Talk to Them about the Long-Term Benefits
When kids first get braces on, it can be difficult for them to think about the benefits in the long term, particularly if they have a year or two of treatment ahead. It may help to remind them of just how much braces can benefit them. Talk about how straight their teeth will be after they get their braces off, and the oral health problems that can develop if they don’t get braces. Giving your child some perspective can help them appreciate their braces more.
