Will My Teeth Hurt After Braces?

You’ve made the decision to move forward with braces. Orthodontic treatment is one of the best choices you could ever make. Not only will it give you a beautiful smile, but it will also help you to have a healthier smile. Properly adjusted teeth are easier to keep clean. You’ll also find that braces bring your bite into proper alignment, helping you to stave off serious problems, like sleep apnea and TMJ disorders. As you prepare for the months ahead, one question that you may ask yourself is, “Will my teeth hurt after braces?”

Will Braces Make Your Teeth Hurt?

When you begin orthodontic treatment, a gentle tension is going to be applied to your teeth. After all, this is the whole concept behind braces as they work to shift your teeth into the proper position to close gaps, correct crowding or adjust your bite. It is only natural for your teeth to feel different for a few days after your braces are first applied or any time that our orthodontist makes an adjustment to your braces.

The good news is this discomfort won’t last long and the final results will be well worth it. However, there are some remedies you can try at home to ease any discomfort that you may be feeling when it comes to your braces.

Take Your Tylenol

If your teeth hurt after braces, Tylenol or other pain relievers in the grocery store can work wonders. Try taking something before your appointment and as needed after your first visit for braces.

Consider Numbing Medication

There are several types of numbing medications available that are intended for use in the mouth. They are typically used to treat canker sores or irritated gums. You can apply an anesthetic medication to any spot in your mouth that is bothering you or liberally rub it into your entire gums to get some relief.

Use a Cold Compress

A cold compress, or an icepack, can give you the relief you are looking for if your teeth hurt after braces. Give yourself time and the cooling effect will reduce any inflammation that is taking place in your mouth. To find even more relief, fill up a glass with water that is as cold as you can take it.

Go Easy on Your Mouth

Right after you get your braces, expect your mouth to be tender and choose foods that are going to be gentle to your teeth. Opt for anything soft, from yogurt to applesauce, soup and ice cream. Give your mouth a chance to recover and you’ll soon be back to normal.
