Invisalign vs Braces

One of the biggest concerns for individuals who need orthodontics treatment revolves around the straightening of the teeth. There are two common means for straightening and aligning the teeth that are very popular. These are traditional braces and Invisalign. It is important to know the differences between these orthodontic solutions to make a better decision as to which is better for you.

At Grace and Bowman Orthodontics in Fort Walton Beach and Niceville, we offer different types of braces as well as Invisalign. Both braces and Invisalign are great orthodontic solutions, but certain patients will experience better results from one treatment versus the other. Contact Grace and Bowman Orthodontics today to schedule your consultation. We’ll discuss your options and create the most effective treatment plan for your needs.

While traditional braces are made from metal and include wires, Invisalign aligners are made from a hard plastic material that is invisible, hence the product’s name. What this means is that standard metallic braces are essentially “permanent” and cannot be removed. Invisalign, on the other hand, can be removed at any time, meaning that you can more easily eat, brush your teeth and floss and clean the aligners themselves when necessary. Of course, you can’t easily clean traditional braces because they are not removable. It also means that you are not as easily able to brush your teeth or floss between them when you wear traditional braces.

Because traditional braces are made out of metal, they can be quite painful and result in cuts and nicks in the mouth. Invisalign doesn’t cause any of these problems and offers only minimal discomfort.

Additionally, because they are clear, Invisalign aligners are practically invisible to most other people and hardly anyone will even realize you are wearing them. The same certainly can’t be said for regular metallic braces with their multitude of wires. Braces can bring about psychological and self-esteem issues in people because of their obvious appearance, especially when the individual wearing them is an adult as there is a stigma that comes with wearing them past a certain age. When you use Invisalign, you don’t have to worry about such problems.

Regular braces are extremely effective when it comes to straightening your teeth. They are so effective because they are a more permanent solution. Treatment time varies between braces and Invisalign. Braces usually require longer treatments because they can correct more severe issues. Invisalign is also not as effective in treating certain types of dental issues like bite problems.

Both orthodontic solutions require regular adjustments. Braces will have to be adjusted or tightened approximately every four to six weeks. Invisalign will also have to be adjusted every few weeks as your teeth begin to straighten and align in your mouth.

Generally speaking, the type of treatment you get for your orthodontic issues greatly depends on your particular needs and the condition of your mouth. Your best course of action in deciding whether you prefer Invisalign or traditional metallic braces is to discuss your situation with one of our medical staff members.
