Orthodontic care comes in many different forms. Two major orthodontic treatments for crooked teeth are Invisalign® and traditional braces. For the best results, it’s important to understand the differences between the two. Both treatments are designed to straighten teeth and improve oral health. However, since Invisalign® has only been around for roughly two decades, it doesn’t have the same history as traditional braces.
Invisalign® Vs Traditional Braces
The major difference is that traditional braces are designed with metal, and Invisalign® is made from plastic. The brackets used for traditional braces must be glued to your teeth and connected with a metal wire. Rubber bands are also needed to keep metal braces working properly. Over time, the technology for traditional braces has improved. Today, you can choose brackets that closely match the natural color of your teeth, which gives the braces a more discreet appearance.
What About Invisalign®?
Invisalign® is much less noticeable than traditional braces, which makes it a great option for patients who want their orthodontic treatment to be less noticeable.
The aligner trays are made from a special type of plastic that doesn’t contain any Bisphenol A (BPA). For the treatment to work, the aligners must be worn over your teeth. Before you can get the aligners, we’ll need to take impressions of your teeth.
What Are the Major Differences?
Unlike Invisalign® aligners, traditional braces cannot be removed from your mouth; they require metal brackets to be glued to your teeth. However, for an additional cost, you can select brackets that have an enamel color.
Invisalign® aligners are clear trays, and most people will have no clue you’re wearing them. Traditional braces must be worn 24 hours a day. The average amount of time required for orthodontic treatment with traditional braces is two years.
Aligners must be worn for about 22 hours a day. While treatment time varies, it generally takes from six to 18 months. When it comes to cleaning, traditional braces must be worn while you brush, and it’s a good idea to use a water pick for cleaning.
With aligners, cleaning is much easier because you can remove the trays before brushing. Treatment with Invisalign® requires bi-weekly orthodontic appointments for maintenance. Traditional braces generally require a check up once per month.
What Are the Pros and Cons of Traditional Braces?
Traditional braces are still the ideal choice when it comes to treating more severe orthodontic issues, such as underbites and overbites. Since you can’t remove them, there will never be any temptation to leave them out. Simply put, you won’t need to constantly remember them to stick to the treatment plan.
Traditional braces also don’t require extra cleaning steps, but you’ll still need to brush and floss regularly. Although they have several benefits to offer, traditional braces do come with dietary restrictions. However, traditional braces are still the best choice for many situations.
What Are the Pros and Cons of Invisalign®?
Many patients choose Invisalign aligners because they’re removable, invisible and comfortable. When wearing the aligners, you shouldn’t have trouble eating or speaking, and unlike traditional braces, you don’t have to worry about brushing around wires.
